My Little Black Book

Posted by Nic Billington under Uncategorized

One of my biggest flaws is forgetting, so an easy solution like jotting ideas down is essential for someone like me.

I keep a book that contains all my ideas and plans that I’d like to use at a later stage of my career. Things like music video concepts, dance routines, stage ideas and basically anything the pops into my head, all gets written down into my little black book.

Not only does it constantly remind you of all the things you’d like to achieve someday but it is also a great help when it comes to those “dry spell moments when you can’t think of anything new.

A Blast From the Past

Posted by Nic Billington under Uncategorized

Ever heard a song that just takes you back and let’s you briefly relive a moment from the past? That is one thing that will forever fascinate me about music.

While on a flight to Pretoria recently, I managed to sneak in a quick listening session with my MP3 player. My latest demo came on, currently titled “Sweet Dreams”. I looked out the window of the plane and saw a full moon in all its splendor as it highlighted the clouds with a beautiful dark blue tint.

It was just one of those unplanned perfect moments in time that totally stood out from the ordinary. I just took it all in and enjoyed it while it lasted.

This morning while trying to complete the lyrics to my latest song, I got taken right back to that amazing moment on the plane. It’s so surreal how music just attaches itself to an era in your life. How and why it happens is a complete mystery. It’s all just part of the “magic” that comes with music.

Going, Going… GONE!

Today I started thinking about all the stuff I’m yet to achieve and honestly, it made me incredibly depressed.

“I’m just not ready, I’m just not ready yet”, is all that has been running through my head for the last few years. I’ve realized that if I’m not ready by now, I’ll never be. I am already 23 years old and time is not on my side.

I’ve decided to put my foot down and make things happen for me. This year is going to be very different. I’m going to allow myself to grab those opportunities that pass my way. I’m confident that I’m more ready now than I’ll ever be.

Inspiration

Posted by Nic Billington under Uncategorized

I get inspired by the little things in life - a cool breeze on my face, looking at the ocean or sky, a happy memory or a meaningful song. Just to name a few. These things help me get by when working on a particular project.

I find I have more inspiration at night when working on a song. I think it has something to do with it being so calm and quiet at that time.

I would be wasting my time making anything when uninspired so when I’m not in the mood, I don’t even bother. Often, I find the best songs are the ones that come to me the quickest. Sometimes it just all flows together and in 10 minutes I’ve got an entire track. Unfortunately, you can’t force it.

You just have to be in the right frame of mind at the right time and place.

Not An Easy Journey

Posted by Nic Billington under Uncategorized

Getting into the music industry is not an easy journey. Things are slowly coming together for me. I’ve been doing so much planning on my Nic Billington project these past few days. It’s going to be really nice to see how it all unfolds in reality. I can’t even explain how intimidating it feels though.

I’ve been taking singing lessons for the past two months to get my vocals “ready for when I start recording THIS YEAR. Charon is such an amazing teacher. http://www.wrstudios.co.za I really wish I started taking lessons at an earlier stage. It’s so extremely important!

There’s still so much to do that it sometimes seems impossible to find the right direction. You often feel like you have to go backwards to go forward but I’m learning that you just have to get through it bit by bit.

Often, the journey is more rewarding than the destination itself… So I’m not rushing into anything, just enjoying the whole process.

YouTube Covers

Why do I cover other artists’ songs? This is a question I’ve been asked quite a few times.

The answer is simple. Why not?

I would upload originals but unfortunately they are all in their demo stages until I rerecord them. I wouldn’t want people to hear songs that haven’t reached their full potential.

I’m constantly writing new material but it’s fun to play around with other songs at the same time. It really simulates the mind having to constantly come up with new ideas. I’m doing things I wouldn’t normally do so early on in my career. I’d like to think of it as my practice round before the REAL deal.
